|
After two days of hockey in Port Elizabeth, and a final round of pool games to go there are still seven teams who are able to make it into semi finals on Friday. Tayla Western Province are yet to show their true form in pool A, only managing a narrow win against the Peninsula team and a draw against Southern's. Despite being top of the table Tayla Western Province are still not a certainty for the semi's.

Game 1: Tayla Western Province vs Peninsula
It's never easy playing against your B team in a tournament. Past results count for nothing as the Pens always save their best for us. The Pens side played exceptionally well, and took the lead early on through a well executed penalty corner. Their marking was first rate, and allowed us very little space to operate in. We found it difficult to get going but eventually we started winning corners.
(The slightly uneven turf has made trapping the ball tricky at the top of the circle and a number of teams have since had to slow down their injection)
I scored the first of our corners, putting the scores back to level terms at 1-1. Terwin put our second away when he latched onto a loose ball in the circle, well finished!
With the half time score at 2-1 we knew the Pens weren't finished yet, and they came back strongly to level the game at 2-2. With just a few minutes to go on the clock we were awarded another corner which I converted for the win. Final score 3-2.
Game 2: Tayla Western Province vs Southern Gauteng
Going into today's game we were confident that we could stop their short corner threat by limiting their circle entries. Our general standard was however not good enough. We made a number of poor ball handling errors and gave Southern's a number of opportunities to score. Fortunately Le Roux was at hand to keep a number of their efforts out. A great performance from the young keeper. We missed chances of our own, some which were saved by good keeping but most from poor execution in the six yard area. We went down early again from a penalty corner, but once more we equaled things up when De Voux put his reverse stick through Pieterse's legs after having just come on. Terwin, also having just come on the field scored his second of the tournament to give us the lead, 2-1.
We let Southern's off the hook with a number of our shots going wide, and while we were squandering our chances they brought it back to 2-2 with a break away goal. Burton-Moore finished a sharp chance on the far post to give us the lead once more, which we held until the last dying seconds of the game. Southern's managed to score to draw the game when we failed to defend a hit in from the 23 yard side line. A poor finish from ourselves.
We are fortunate enough to have our own video technician with us this tour and will certainly be looking a few key areas to improve upon come tomorrow evening when we face the home side, Eastern Province at 17:30.
